ABSTRACT:
Science Fiction expresses fundamental things about the universe and humanity, like ancient myths explained before. Science Fiction cannot be thought of without the conception of the future. Nevertheless, with the consideration that nowadays many science fiction predictions have already come true, the definition of the genre needs to be revisited. What for science fiction writers of the 19th or early 20th Century was a fantasy, albeit based on some assumptions, on anticipation, has become much more real for us today. New scientific discoveries occur almost every day. Science fiction writers use these discoveries in their works and make assumptions about the future of this discovery, about how it will affect humanity. Many science fiction assumptions are perceived by us now, not as something that is anticipated, but as quite real, which could happen in the near future. In this paper, we will focus on the future concept in science fiction, and try to understand why it is essential for this genre.
