Abstract:

This research explores the relationship between popular animated films and mental landscapes. The majority of people grow up watching animated series or feature films. The research explores the various ways audiences can be affected by depictions of nature in animation and live-action films. Eco-criticism is a theory that has been applied to various forms of media since the 80s, however, the study of environmental themes and their impact on audiences is still a lesser-developed area of study. This study aims to understand the relationship between the audience and nature depictions in cinema, encouraging further research in this field. In order to do this, a study was conducted in 2 parts. First, a watch party with an open-ended questionnaire and focus groups was carried out, and then a second group of questionnaires were sent electronically. Participants watched excerpts from 3 of the popular animation and live-action films: Bambi, Princess Kaguya, and The Revenant. These three films were chosen as they are all respected for their depiction of the natural world.  The study consisted of 20 participants aged 20-58. Adults were chosen to get more mature and detailed answers from people more accountable for their behavior towards the environment.
