Abstract:

The Mainstream Cinema of Hollywood and its dominant film language would be problematic for the representation of gender issues. Patriarchal society created hetero-male domination in gender relations, and the male gaze was the result of this relationship. The perspective of men makes objectification of women’s bodies and character depiction. For example, cinematographically sexist female body framing on camera and powerless women character archetypes created for male spectators are three main problems. On the contrary, the deconstruction of the male gaze with the female gaze aims to show women as subjects, not objects on the screen. This research aims to understand the differences between the male and female gazes through Hollywood’s mainstream cinema. DC Comic’s Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey films will be used to analyse gender power relations issues and contribute to feminist film studies as contemporary filmography.
